A walk around Finedon by Carolyn Smith £3 +p&p

The walk takes you from the former Friends Meeting House at the east end of the old town, down High street, across Affleck Bridge then along Regent Street, to the bottom of Bell Hill, across Stocks Hill to Hampton Cell and the parish church, with images and a potted history of the historic buildings that are passed.

A History of Finedon’s Fire Brigade 1906-1935 by Carolyn Smith £5 +p&p

Finedon had its own volunteer fire brigade from 1906 to 1935 when Finedon council was taken over/amalgamated into the Borough of Wellingborough. Read about and see photographs of the men involved and some of the fires that they fought with their very basic appliance that had to be pulled from their yard, just behind the Town Hall, to where ever the fire occurred. On two occasions this was up to the Irthlingborough Road to tackle factory fires! When it was recorded that the firemen were exhausted before they got to the blaze!

Finedon Women’s Co-op Guild by Francis Terry £10+p&p,

Almost one hundred years ago a group of about 80 Finedon women came together to form a branch of the Women’s Co-operative Guild.  

Times were hard in the aftermath of the First World War and life in Finedon was quite primitive by modern standards.  The Guild provided invaluable help to them in managing household expenditure, providing wholesome meals and home comforts, raising their families and supporting their menfolk.

Ironstone Quarries Railways and Tramways by Francis Terry £5+p&p,

This is a history of the quarries and the men that worked in the ironstone industry around the Finedon area from the late 19th century to its demise and closure in the 1960s.

This is an A5 size booklet of thirty-seven pages, including fourteen black and white photographs and five sketch plans.

A Finedon Timeline by Carolyn Smith £5+p&p

In 2014, the Society curated an exhibition entitled ‘A Finedon Timeline’, which identified sixty-one events that demonstrated the rich history of Finedon over 1000 years. Carolyn Smith has expanded on the information displayed in that exhibition in order to produce this interesting, concise book covering 1000 years of Finedon’s past. This A5 size booklet of thirty-eight pages is illustrated with both colour and black and white images.

From Finedon to Van Diemen’s Land by Carolyn Smith and Michael Britton £5+p&p,

This is the story of three Finedon men: John Hodson, Thomas Boddington & Joseph Houghton. In 1828 and 1836 these men were transported to Van Diemen’s Land ( present-day Tasmania) for fourteen years each, never to return to Finedon. Their crimes ‘stealing a lamb and two bags of potatoes’.

From over five years of meticulous research by the late Peter Inns, this book contains biographies (the majority with photographs) of the 169 men who are listed on the Finedon War Memorial: 133 from the First World War and a further 36 from the Second World War.The book also provides details of the twenty-two men and one woman with strong Finedon connections who also gave their lives but are honoured elsewhere.
